Hankyung Job & Joy profiled ModigenceVision on March 12, 2024, in its series on companies selected for Suwon University’s 2023 pre-startup package. Founded in June 2023 by Kim Dae-hee, then 43, the company was nine months old.
Kim holds a doctorate in imaging engineering, in image processing and computer vision, and worked for about seven years at Namuga, a camera module supplier to Samsung Electronics. The company name, he explains, joins modi, a word for gathering in the dialect of Korea’s southeast, with divergence: gather technology and send it out.
A camera module is only part of what a product needs. ISP tuning, driver bring-up, and the module’s shape, size, field of view, and interface all have to match the product, which is why large manufacturers keep a camera lab of their own. The company develops and manufactures 2D and 3D camera modules to the customer’s needs and provides that support, so that a customer without a camera lab can add a camera to a new product. Its first lineup: two 5-megapixel RGB modules, one ToF camera, a SerDes board, a UVC board, and a viewer program.
A ToF-based 3D camera was planned for the second half of 2024 under the working name MARU, positioned against the most widely used 3D camera of the time on range and accuracy. Customers included delivery robot, wearable device, and logistics system companies, under development or production contracts or in discussion.
The team was four people, all developers, each with more than ten years in cameras and experience from development through mass production. Kim’s stated direction: keep making cameras easier to apply, and grow from modules into computer vision systems for fields such as AR, VR, and the metaverse.
